Quarry tile alternative

Done regrouting? Replace quarry tile for good.

Quarry tile looks tough until the grout goes. Protect-All replaces thousands of feet of grout joints with a few hundred feet of welded seams, in a slip-resistant floor your cooks can actually stand on.

  • No grout lines
  • NFSI certified (matte)
  • Installs around closed hours

The problem with quarry tile

The grout is always the weak spot

Quarry tile is dense and durable, but it is only as good as the grout between it. In a busy kitchen, hot water, degreasers and constant traffic erode grout until tiles loosen, crack and rock underfoot. Open joints collect grease and food soil, and the floor gets harder to clean every month.

  • Cracked and loose tiles become trip hazards and inspection notes
  • Eroded grout holds grease, water and odor
  • Regrouting means closing sections of the kitchen again and again
  • Hard, unforgiving surface is tough on legs, backs and dropped plates
  • Floor mats pile up to fight slips, and become hazards themselves

Install options

Tear out, or go over?

The manufacturer’s current installation manual allows Protect-All to go over sound quarry, ceramic, porcelain or terrazzo tile with intact grout, which can save demolition time and cost. It also recommends removing old flooring down to the subfloor in many situations.

So the honest answer is: it depends on your tile. During the site assessment we check for loose or hollow tiles, failed grout, moisture and floor height at doors and drains, then recommend the approach that will last. You will know before you sign.

Process

How a replacement runs

Site assessment

We walk the space, measure, check the slab or subfloor and note drains, thresholds and equipment that has to move.

Clear scope

You get a written scope: install system, color, cove base, drain rings, schedule and price. No guesswork on install night.

Install

Our factory-trained crew preps the substrate, sets Protect-All in urethane adhesive and welds the seams. Most kitchens are scheduled around closed hours.

Back to work

Rapid Weld seams take foot traffic in about 20 to 30 minutes; the adhesive reaches normal traffic in roughly 12 hours.

FAQ

Quarry tile replacement questions

What is the best replacement for quarry tile in a commercial kitchen?
It depends on your priorities, but if you want to eliminate grout, improve traction and comfort, and get back in service quickly, a welded sheet vinyl system like Protect-All is a strong choice. Poured epoxy and urethane cement are seamless too, but they are hard underfoot and typically need longer cure times.
Can Protect-All go right over my existing quarry tile?
Sometimes. The current manufacturer manual allows installation over sound quarry tile with intact grout. Loose tile, failed grout or height problems mean it should come up first. We decide after inspecting.
How long will my kitchen be closed?
Many kitchens are completed around closed hours, overnight or across a few nights for larger spaces. Rapid Weld seams take foot traffic in about 20 to 30 minutes and the adhesive reaches normal traffic in about 12 hours.
Is it approved by the health department?
Floors must be smooth, durable, easily cleanable and non-absorbent in wet areas. Georgia’s design manual lists PVC with chemically welded seams as an accepted walk-in floor. Your local inspector has the final say. See health code floor requirements.
What does it cost compared to quarry tile?
We quote every job after a site visit. See the cost guide for the factors that drive price.
