Tearing out quarry tile is loud, dusty and slow. Sometimes you can skip it. Here is when going over existing tile works, and when it will cost you more in the end.
Protect-All’s current (2023) installation manual allows installation over sound quarry, ceramic, porcelain and terrazzo tile with intact grout. VCT and sheet vinyl have to be removed first. At the same time, the manufacturer’s guidance for owners highly recommends removing old flooring down to the subfloor, and older specifications prohibited installing over tile altogether.
So the decision depends on your specific floor. If tiles are loose, hollow, cracked or sitting on wet grout, a new floor bonded over them will only be as good as what is underneath. If the tile is tight and dry, going over it can save real time and money.
| Install over sound tile | Tear out to the slab | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | Faster, less demolition | Slower, noisy and dusty |
| Cost | Lower demolition and disposal | Higher, plus possible slab repair |
| Floor height | Adds about 1/4 in. plus adhesive | Lower finished height |
| Risk | Depends on hidden tile and grout condition | You see and fix the substrate |
| Best when | Tile is tight, dry and flat | Tile is loose, cracked or wet |
